German automaker BMW has introduced its first-ever 4-door electric Gran Coupe, the production version of the 2022 i4, at the BMW annual conference, sharing a few more specifics on what we can expect from its upcoming first fully electric sedan, as well as presenting the first exterior shots of the new model.
The pure-electric four-door is claimed to have a range of up to 590 kilometers on a single charge, according to the manufacturer. The BMW i4 is a plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 4-series, which is based on the 3-series. The BMW i4 Gran Coupe will be available for purchase later this year.
BMW did not include pricing details, but it is expected to compete with Tesla's Model S, Audi's 2022 e-tron GT, Lucid's 2021 Air, and Porsche's Taycan. The 2022 i4 Gran Coupe will be available in a variety of trim levels, with the top-of-the-line model with 80 kWh battery pack producing 530 bhp and a range of 300 miles according to the EPA. The i4 is supposed to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in around four seconds with this engine. BMW claims that a M Performance version would be available as well.
According to preliminary testing based on EPA research protocols, BMW claims a range of up to 300 miles. Although the spectrum is less than Tesla and certain other rivals, it is also greater than what is achievable with current technology. While that range is less than what Tesla and some other competitors can offer, it’s still more than what’s possible with comparable all-electric Porsche and Audi models like the eTaycan and e-tron GT, which are in the lower 200s.
“With its sporty looks, best in class driving dynamics and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric,” said Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales.
