Nissan has debuted the fourth-generation X-Trail at the Shanghai Auto Show in China and this time the X-Trail brings with it a hybrid powertrain. Let's start with that, the new-gen X-Trail gets an e-POWER technology featuring a VC Turbo 300 petrol motor that is solely used to charge a battery powering a DC electric motor mounted on the front axle.
This hybrid powertrain results in an output of 201 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. Like the fully electric Nissan Leaf, 2021 X-Trail also features a one-pedal operational ability called ‘e-Pedal’. This system offers enhanced fuel efficiency and lower emissions in comparison to its conventional IC engine-powered counterparts.
Nissan says the four-wheel-drive version will give the new X-Trail “rugged versatility” and improve ability off-road, with the all-wheel-drive system configurable for snow, gravel, or mud, helping boost confidence in bad conditions.
The new Nissan X-Trail gets a complete design overhaul that sees it take on boxier, more angular styling than before. A large, chrome-trimmed signature V-Motion grille is flanked by split LED headlights with a claw-like shape, while the roofline is flatter than in the previous model. The move to the new CMF-C platforms means the X-Trail will also be available with a third row of seats, offering seven-seat capability for larger families.
The interior will pack more advanced kit, including more driver assistance systems to help safety in this family-oriented machine, while the upgraded platform will also help boost refinement and dynamic performance, according to Nissan. The fourth-generation X-Trail completes Nissan’s overhaul of its SUV line-up, which started in late 2019 with the second-generation Juke, followed by the Ariya all-electric model and the exclusively hybrid new Qashqai, revealed towards the start of this year.
The new X-Trail will go on sale in Europe early next year and the UK in 2022. Nissan has yet to announce pricing for the new X-Trail but given the new platform and the increase in technology on offer, the price tag will start at a slightly larger figure than the outgoing model, which starts at £26,835.
