As per reports, it has been found that a large number of vehicle parts are being smuggled in illegally from Sunauli Border, one of the main checkpoints of Nepal from India, is causing huge loss of revenue to the state on a daily basis. Vehicle parts, when imported, are subjected to 43% of the revenue including VAT, but the government is losing millions of rupees daily due to illegal imports. While the concerned bodies remain silent, this trend is increasing day by day. According to the owner of Jamuna & Sons, an autoparts business based in Bhairahawa area, more than 60% of the daily parts are being imported illegally and the lack of interest from the concerned bodies has further encouraged illegal imports. Initially, such activities were carried out only around the border, but now such illegal imports have spread to the entire region of Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and Nawalparasi.Similarly, Babu Ram Acharya, Vice-chairman, Butwal Engineering Association, says that it is a matter of surprise that the concerned bodies have remained silent in spite of the fact that they have been repeatedly informed in this regard. As per the local traders, the vehicle owners themselves contact traders across the Indian border town with the help of agents, and import parts bending several laws . This has directly hampered the governments revenue and displaced local traders. In spite of this serious matter, the concerned bodies have stayed null. This has raised questions about the working style of the body as well as the use of fake parts being sold as 'genuine' in the lure of cheap price seems to be increasing. In this regard, it is imperative that the concerned bodies take concrete steps as soon as possible to completely stop the illegal imports and the central government needs to pay special attention to discourage such activities in the future.Photo copyright: fotofabrika - Fotolia
