BMW has unveiled the third-gen X1 and the all-electric iX1 for the global market. The new X1 features a new distinctive design, increased specifications and a wide range of powertrain options. At the centre of the new front end design stands the large, almost square BMW kidney grille, its contouring highlighted by the three-dimensional chrome surround. The side profile is characterised by chunkier wheel arches and flush door handles. At the rear, horizontal lines, the narrow rear window and flared wheel arches emphasise the body’s width. The new BMW X1 is larger than its predecessor – by 53mm in length to 4,500mm, 24mm in width to 1,845mm and 44mm in height to 1,642mm. Its wheelbase is 2,692mm, 22mm longer than before, while its track widths have increased by 31mm to 1,592mm at the front and 1,593mm at the rear.On the inside, the new X1 gets generous amounts of space and new-age functionality. Key features include the slender instrument panel, a stage for the BMW Curved Display, and a “floating” armrest with integral controls. The new X1 also gets the standard BMW Curved Display formed by a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch control display. The new BMW X1 will be available with a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines. The petrol range includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 136hp, a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance and 170hp, both these cars are front-wheel drive and a 2.0-litre petrol mild-hybrid with 204 ho and all-wheel drive. The two diesel engines include - a 2.0-litre engine with 150 hp, a 2.0-litre with mild-hybrid technology that churns out 211 hp and all-wheel-drive. Finally, there are the two plug-in hybrid models, the 245hp 25e and the 326hp 30e that utilise a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor to drive the rear wheels. The BMW iX1 EV, on the other hand, gets two electric motors producing a combined 313hp and 493Nm.
