Reconsider EVs Upto 200 kW As Per The Earlier Policy, Says NADA

June 7, 2022

Although the 2079/80 Budget presented by the Hon'ble Finance Minister Janardan Sharma clearly mentioned the use of renewable electricity as an alternative to petroleum products, the government has drastically increased the customs and excise duties on electric vehicles above 100 kW. It is understood that the use of electric vehicles has rather been discouraged than encouraged. Hence, NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal has requested the government to make arrangements as per the earlier policy for electric vehicles up to 200 kW.

Similarly, the Government of Nepal has also banned the import of private vehicles till Mid-August to improve the country's current foreign exchange reserves. As the import of these private vehicles does not seem to have much effect on the foreign exchange reserves and balance of payments situation, NADA has also appealed to the government for an easy solution to the import ban.

Furthermore, the government has exorbitantly increased the customs duty on motorcycles above 200cc through the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. With the added customs and excise duties, there will be a steep hike in the prices of motorcycles above 200cc. Hence, NADA wants the government to reconsider this decision as well.
